چکیده

CfiitD guidance has been in existence in this ^?untry for some twenty-five years, but it would e interesting to know how many people among general public are even aware of the name. Jtany professional people know the name but aye little idea of what it does, except from some etaf that child guidance either cures mental ill? ess in children or changes abnormal behaviour ^to conforming behaviour. Even when working pfties are set up by the government the func'0tl of child guidance is likely to be misunder??d. For instance, the Summerfield Report on Psychologists confused child guidance with the chool Psychological Service, while the Seebohm ^Port saw it in terms of "mental illness" (in hich case it should be part of" the hospital ser,.lCe) or in terms of "problem family guidance" lri Which case it should be part of some social ervice department). Perhaps this ignorance is not really surprising. Qild guidance is actively involved with the public 0 a minimal extent, and this is based primarily in the families who are referred to a clinic for elp. But at the professional level there may be j. ,cause for concern if the ignorance reflects a ^'lure on the part of workers in child guidance
